Diabetes Awareness Month

November 3, 2009 --

The Fond du Lac Evening Lions Club along with the Wisconsin Lions Foundation is participating in Diabetes Awareness Month during the month of November.  The program exists of getting individuals to take the Diabetes Risk Test which is located on the club’s website.

The Lions’ goal is to educate and encourage those at risk to consult with their health care provider to determine for sure that they may have diabetes.  Diabetes is an epidemic in the United States and in Fond du Lac.  Numbers of people afflicted with this chronic disease increase dramatically each year.  About 95% of the people with diabetes have Type 2 diabetes, the severe consequences of which may be delayed or prevented through increased awareness and understanding which results in lifestyle changes.

Questions on the survey include: do you have a parent, brother or sister with diabetes?  If you are a woman, have you had a baby weighing more than 9 pounds at birth?  If you are under 65 years of age, do you get little or no exercise?  And of course, are you overweight?

You can take this survey on the Fond du Lac Evening Lions’ website at fonddulaclions.org and also on the Wisconsin Lions Foundation website – wlf.info under Projects - Community Diabetes Education Project – Risk Test.
